David Shifrin
is one of only two wind players to receive the Avery Fisher Prize since the award’s inception in 1974. Renowned as orchestral soloist, recitalist and chamber music collaborator, he has performed with major orchestras in the United States, Europe and Asia and served as principal clarinet of the Cleveland Orchestra and Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, as well as the American, Honolulu, New York Chamber and Dallas Symphonies.

Recipient of a Solo Recitalists’ Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, his recital hall appearances include Alice Tully Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, the 92nd Street Y, Library of Congress and throughout Germany. Among the rarified artists with whom he has performed chamber music are the Guarneri, Tokyo and Emerson String Quartets, Wynton Marsalis, Emanuel Ax and André Watts.

His discography for diverse labels garner praise and awards, including three Grammy nominations for collaborative recordings of the collected chamber music of Debussy (Delos) with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Copland’s Clarinet Concerto (Angel/EMI) and Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro with the Tokyo String Quartet (Angel/EMI). The Mozart Clarinet Concerto (performed in its original version on a specially built basset clarinet) with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra was named Record of the Year by Stereo Review.

Shifrin champions the works of 20th and 21st Century American composers, including commissions of new works. Since 1981, he has been Artistic Director of Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Oregon and a long-time member of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center where he served as Artistic Director from 1992-2004. Currently a professor of music at Yale University, he also has served on the faculties of The Juilliard School, the University of Southern California, the University of Michigan, the Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of Hawaii.
